“Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

James 3:13-18

Now, it would be super tempting to just focus on the one line of this beautiful passage.

“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

James 3:17

But we have to remember that anytime there is a ‘but’ we have to be mindful of what the ‘but’ is all about. It’s easy to gloss over the parts that may convict us. That may cause us to pause or make us really think about what we are doing and if there is a lesson here to be learned and listened to.

Here, we are exploring the question- where does wisdom come from and how is it shown?

Wisdom comes from above, from God.

We show that wisdom through meekness, through peace, through His beautiful, peaceable, gentle will. Anything else, anything that is spurred from jealousy, envy, selfish ambition, or to toot our own horn, for our own glory, that is not from God. It even goes as far as to say that where selfish ambition exists things will be a flat-out mess. Jealousy, envy, bragging, boasting, it is all of this earth, not of God.

But when we act from His will, from His wisdom, then friends we are promised quite the opposite.

Good things come from peace and those who walk with the Prince of Peace.

Treat each other with love.

That is His wisdom from above.
